Thelma Safford Obituary

Mrs. Thelma Jane (Streed) Safford, age 83, of St. Johnsville, NY passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022, with her family at her side.

Born on August 27, 1938, in Fort Plain, NY she was the daughter of the late Perry R. and Lulu M. (Fredericks) Streed. Thelma was raised and educated in Fort Plain and spent all her life in the Mohawk Valley. She married her late husband, Leland C. Safford, and raised four daughters in their lifelong home in St. Johnsville.

Thelma was last employed at the St. Johnsville Nursing Home where she held the position of Head of Housekeeping. At one time she was a waitress for the former Kane's Restaurant in Little Falls.

Thelma was always busy in her kitchen. She loved to cook and bake for her family. The holidays, while very predictable in menu, had an abundance of food and cookies to fit everyone's favorites. Christmas was her most cherished and celebrated holiday. Her house would be decorated from every corner, and the sacred butter cookies would be hidden in her own version of Fort Knox to be divvied out only by her. Many memories were made at these gatherings and fill the hearts of her family and friends.

Thelma also loved to read, enjoy Pine Lake and Glimmerglass outings in the summer, and to treasure hunt at any local lawn, garage, or porch sales. She was a very proud and independent woman. Whatever she put her mind to, she would succeed at.

Surviving are her beloved daughters, Beth Schwasnick and husband Gary, Deborah Forgette and husband Kevin, Wendy Hazzard and husband Bud, and Robyn Safford; her brothers, Robert Streed and wife Martha of Chicago, IL and Donald Streed and wife Brenda of Saratoga; her grandchildren, Adam Schwasnick and wife Amanda, Alec Brown and wife Ioana, A.J. Hazzard, Jessica (Hazzard) Smith and husband Jayson and Colden Carrig; great grandchildren, Danica, Kenton, Cassidy Schwasnick and Zayne Smith.

She was predeceased by her husband Lee Safford, her sisters, Janice Handy and Shirley Fero, sister-in-law, Marlene DiMaggio, and her great granddaughter, Annalyse Smith.

In keeping with Thelma's wishes funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of her family. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY
