Sharon A. Gambino, 79, a longtime Mohawk Valley resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2025, at The Grand in Ilion, NY, with her loving family by her side.
Sharon was born on February 28, 1946, in Herkimer, NY, the daughter of the late Samuel T. and Nellie E. (Richardson) Gunter. After graduating from Herkimer High School, Sharon embraced life with spark, independence, and a sense of adventure. She and her sister, Virginia, spent unforgettable times traveling to New York City and living in Buffalo, always embracing new experiences and friendships along the way.
Sharon returned to the Mohawk Valley, where she settled down with her family and worked for many years at the former Remington Arms in Ilion. Known for her generosity when she could give and her love for living in the moment, Sharon touched the lives of those around her in ways both big and small.
The staff at The Grand will have fond memories of her lively nature. Her family loved her for that same vibrancy and stubbornness, qualities that made her unforgettable.
Sharon is survived by her daughters, Maureen McEvers and Michelle Steenburg, and husband Shawn; her son, Mauro Gambino, Jr.; her grandchildren, Brandon McEvers, Morgan McEvers, Audrey Steenburg, and Avery Steenburg; her great-grandchildren, Sampson, Celeste, and Evelyn; her sister, Virginia Miller, and husband Russ; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Anderson.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the locally owned and family-operated Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to Hannaford Markets), 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY. A prayer service will follow at 7:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Christopher Schumske, pastor of the Oak Ridge Free Methodist Church, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Grand in Ilion, 99 Sixth Ave., Ilion, NY 13357. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
