Sharon Flanders Obituary

St. Johnsville - Mrs. Sharon E. Flanders, 80, a lifelong St. Johnsville resident and most recently a patient at St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 5, 2025, with her loving family by her side.

She was born on May 20, 1944, in St. Johnsville to Eralio and Mary (Covuoto) Loccia. She was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School. After she graduated, Sharon earned her degree as a beautician and worked part-time from home.

Sharon was married to Lance Flanders, who passed away suddenly in 1986.

She was employed by the St. Johnsville Central School where she worked in the cafeteria for 21 years as a food service worker, retiring in 2004.

Sharon had three children Deanna Flanders Shafer, Derik Flanders, and Dennis Flanders. In 1988, she met her best friend and companion, Richard Carter they shared a relationship of 37 years.

Sharon loved camping, and she and Richard were seasonal campers at West Canada Creek Campsites in Poland, NY, for 33 years, where she made many friends.  She enjoyed doing diamond art, shopping, and going on long rides.

Sharon is survived by her companion, Richard Carter; her daughter, Deanna Shafer and husband Brian, and granddaughter, Tamara Shafer; her son, Derik Flanders and wife Jennifer, and grandchildren, Emma Babb, Conrad Flanders, and Audrey Flanders; her son Dennis Flanders; her great grandchildren, Orion Babb, Asher Wilson and Maeve Flanders; sister-in-law, Sherry Loccia and her son, Robert Loccia; her daughter, Scarlet Hurteau and husband Jeremy; nephew, Jason Pollock and wife Amanda; brother-in-law, Greg Flanders and wife Barbara and their children, Becky, Harry, and Mike Fox; cousins, Susan Spofford and the Enea’s; her best friends, Judy Mereness, Ginny Rice, Homer Buddles, and Joanne Hoffman Sosville.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, her brother, Robert Loccia, and her sister, Janet Pollock and husband David.

There will be no calling hours per Sharon’s request.  She will be cremated, and burial at West St. Johnsville Cemetery will be at the convenience of her family. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the locally owned and family -operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY. All memorial contributions may be made to the Morris J. Edwards American Legion Post # 168, 38 W. Main St., St. Johnsville, NY 13452.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the nurses and staff of the St. Johnsville Rehabilitaion and Nursing Center for the exceptional care shown to Sharon during her stay.
