Sandra Douglas - Schmidt Obituary

Fort Plain - Sandra L. Douglas - Schmidt, 63, of Fort Plain (Town of Minden) passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Manhattan, New York, with her loving family by her side.

She was born on December 24, 1962, in Cooperstown, NY the daughter of Gerald D. Douglas and the late Cheryl A. (Klock) Douglas. Sandy was a graduate of Fort Plain HIgh School. In 2008, Sandy graduated from Mohawk Valley Community College with a nursing degree.

On June 29, 2008, Sandy was united in marriage to Michael Schmidt in Caroga Lake, NY.

Until her retirement, Sandy was a registered nurse at Bassett Healthcare in Herkimer, NY.

Sandy was an active member of the New Life Church in Herkimer and at one time was a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the South Minden Fire House Ladies Auxiliary.

Sandy was a loving and caring daughter, wife, mother, and sister who always put the needs and concerns of her family first. She enjoyed the outdoors, being around her pool in the summer, going camping with her family, planting flowers around her home, and most inportantly her lawn had to be mowed the correct way. In the winter she enjoyed smowmobiling and four wheeling. In her leisure she enjoyed going on cruises and had a special seat at the Fonda Speedway.

Sandy had a heart of gold; she would not turn anyone away if they needed help even if it was family or a complete stranger.

She is survived by her loving husband of 17 years, Michael; her father, Gerald D. Douglas and his wife Eileen; her son, Evan Smith and fiancée Erica Mailloux of Little Falls; grandchildren, Elijah, Carter and Elliana; sisters, Melissa McGovern and husband Mike of Fort Plain; brothers, Mark Douglas and wife Eunice of Fort Plain, Eric Douglas and fiancée Kristine Koster of Fort Plain, Gerald Douglas Jr. of Fort Plain, a sister -in-law, Jody (Oldick) Douglas; and several nieces, and  nephews. She is also survived by her siblings Albert (June) Brownell Jr., of Mayfield, NY, James (Cheryl) Brownell of Fonda, John (Pauline) Brownell of Fort Plain, Robin (Al) Calordino of East Berne, NY, Timothy Brownell of Fort Plain, Chaarles (Stephanie) Brownell of Fort Plain, Julie (Tom) Putman of Palatine, NY, Daniel (Candice) Brownell of Canajoharie, and Bert Brownell of Little Falls.

She was pre-deceased by her mother, Cheryl Brownell and her siblings, Michael B. Douglas, Thomas Brownell, Cherly Clemons, Pam Brownell and Judy Baker.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 4-6 pm at the locally owned and family operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to Hannaford Markets) 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY. A prayer service will follow at 6:00 pm in the chapel of the funeral home. A celebration of her life will follow at the Herkimer VFW, Mohawk St., Herkimer, NY after the services.

In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions to Ayers Memorial Animal Shelter, 133 Hilltop Road, Sprakers, NY 12166. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
