Whitesboro, NY - Salvatore M. (Sal) Marchese, 73, of Whitesboro and a former resident of both Herkimer and Ilion, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 28, 2020, at his home with his loving family by his side after a long battle with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases.

He was born July 22, 1947 in Ilion, NY the son of the late Theresa (Lovechio) Marchese. Sal was educated at St. Francis de Sales School until the eighth grade and graduated from Herkimer High School, class of 1965. He furthered his education receiving his bachelor's degree from SUNY Geneseo, Master's degree from SUNY Cortland and also received his Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS).

On August 17, 1974, Sal was united in marriage to Darlene Dodge at the First United Methodist Church in Ilion, NY.

For over 34 years, Sal was a teacher for the Frankfort - Schuyler Central School District.  In his career as an educator, Sal held many roles; including: teacher, principal and coach of a variety of sports teams.  Sal truly relished his role as a teacher and the relationships he had with his students over the years.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Darlene; a daughter Kyrra Marchese; two sons, Derek (Jennifer) Marchese and Kyle (Kali) Marchese; his sister, Elizabeth (Tim) Vandawalker; two precious grandsons, Dodge and Merritt Marchese; his sister-in-law, Judith Dodge; three nieces, Kimberly (Chris) Bolduc, Tracy (Loren) Dean and Sarah (Brendan) Hall; and a nephew; Brett Dodge.

Sal was predeceased by his mother, Theresa; his in-laws, Wayne and Eunice Dodge; brother-in-law, Dennis Dodge and several aunts and uncles; all of whom Sal loved and missed dearly.

Sal was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, mentor, coach and educator.  He cherished time with his family and was never happier than when on his boat on Fourth Lake.  Sal was an avid golfer, Syracuse football and basketball fan, NY Giants and Yankees fan.  In recent years, he could be found walking and playing fetch with his beloved golden retriever, Bailey.  His two grandsons are his pride and joy and brought him great happiness even during his illness.

The family would like to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of New Hartford, NY; especially: Georgia, Lexi and Karen for the compassion and kindness they showed to Sal and his family which allowed him to remain in the home that he loved.

Sal was a devoted congregant of St. Anthony’s Church and faithfully attended mass there throughout the years.  A memorial mass will be held on Thursday January 7, 2021 at 9:00 am at the Church of Sts. Anthony & Joseph, South Main St., Herkimer, NY with Reverend Leo Potvin officiating and Deacon James Bower assisting. The family will be receiving relatives and friends at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to NBT Bank), 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY 315-866-1500, on Wednesday January 6, 2021 from 4- 7 pm. Due to the current COVID - 19 restrictions, facemask and social distancing is required. All memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 4277 Middle Settlement Road, New Hartford, NY 13413 or to the Rome Abraham House, 417 N. Washington St., Rome, NY 13440. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
