Roger Cool Obituary

Roger Cool, “The Coolman” passed away on January 20, 2022, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

Roger was born on June 12, 1945, in Little Falls, the only child of the late Eveleth Cool and Mae Darling Cool of Salisbury, NY. He graduated from Dolgeville High School in 1963 and attended Mohawk Valley Community College where he majored in civil engineering.

Roger and Maureen (Helmer) enjoyed a loving 25-year relationship and were married on January 29, 2005. Roger’s greatest attribute was his ability to love unconditionally. He was a mild-mannered gentleman who was witty, charming, jovial, creative, and hardworking. He was a beautiful dancer, a dedicated golfer, a jokester, an eternal optimist and a coach for many years. Whatever event he attended, and without fail, he appeared to be the life of the party. Hobbies included a variety of sports, especially playing numerous rounds of golf with Maureen and his Holland Heights golf buddies as well as his interest in watching the NY Giants, NY Yankees, Syracuse Orangemen, the PGA Tour, and all of his children’s sporting events.

Roger was enrolled in the Army Reserves from 1968-1972. His fondest memory of being in the reserves was being a bunk mate with the MLB Hall of Fame legend, Thurman Munson. He would often tell others the story of how Thurman owed him money, but he never received a penny!

In 1972, Roger became a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 545 and worked a surveyor for 37 years before retiring in 2004. After retirement, he worked as a grounds keeper for the De Jong family at Holland Heights Golf Course.

Survivors include his wife Maureen, his son Michael (Mardee) Cool of DE and daughter Kristin (Klint) Crane of MD, step-son Luke Stowell of Herkimer and grandchildren Lauren, Anna, and Michael Cool and Colbi and Johnny Crane. Roger is also survived by the mother of his children, Karen Charles Cool of MD, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to NBT Bank), 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY. There are no calling hours, and interment will commence in the spring in Salisbury Rural Cemetery.
