Mayme Franco Obituary

Mayme Franco, 96, of State Route 168 in Mohawk, died Thursday, February 17, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.

Mayme was born in Ilion on November 18, 1925, the daughter of the late Paul and Theresa Ingro. She went to school in Ilion and moved to Herkimer with her parents when they purchased the Star Restaurant on West Smith Street in Herkimer.

She married the late Anthony Franco on September 23, 1947, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Herkimer.

Mayme enjoyed working as a telephone operator before she was married and then later in life at the Community Pharmacy, Gallinger's Drug Store and, most especially, The Vogue, all on Main Street in Herkimer.

Mayme lived in Herkimer until 1976 when she moved to Mohawk into a beautiful new home built by her husband Tony, with help from his brother Ralph. Mayme enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a talented cook who was always able to effortlessly put together a wonderful meal for a houseful.  She was blessed to have members of her family in Florida who welcomed her during the cold winter months. She loved to play cards, learned to play tennis, and even did a little painting. Mayme was a longtime member of St. Anthony’s Rosary Society. She was particularly close to her sister Nancy.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Sam and Cessaro Ingro and by her sister Mary Winslow.

She is survived by her beloved children, James A. (Paula) of Herkimer, Raymond (Donna) of Cortland, Domenica Christine Hale of Mohawk, and Anthony Joseph (Karen) of Mohawk; her sister, Nancy Decker of Holly Hill Florida; her brother-in-law, Ralph (Dolly) Franco of Herkimer; sister-in-law, Yvonne Franco of Frankfort; brother-in-law, Steve Salamone of Frankfort; twelve grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will take place on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 10:00 am at the Church of Sts. Anthony and Joseph, South Main St., Herkimer, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend Terence Healy and assisted by Deacon James Bower.  There will be no calling hours and internment will take place in the spring at the Calvary Cemetery in Herkimer. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to NBT Bank), 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY.
