Marie Suits Obituary

Marie Walter Suits, 100, of St. Johnsville, NY, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 5, 2021 just 10 days shy of her 101st birthday.

Born in St. Johnsville, NY on August 15, 1920 as the oldest of three children to her parents, Philip and Beatrice (Snell) Walter, Marie was educated at Fort Klock School and St. Johnsville High School. She worked in the St. Johnsville Manufacturing Corp along with some other businesses that assisted in the war effort.   Marie took great pride in her family home being a part of American history. The house in which she grew up was a part of the Underground Railroad, leading fugitive slaves an escape route to Canada.

Marie married Harry Suits on April 30, 1942 at her parents’ home.  They went on together to build their own family farm.  Some of her leisure enjoyments included knitting, crocheting and gardening as well as cooking and canning fruits and vegetables.  She remained a country girl her whole life, tending to family and the farm while also being active in community and church events.

Marie was blessed to have a big, loving family with whom she loved spending time. For her 100th birthday celebrated in 2020, Marie was greeted by a parade of cars of family, friends and the local fire and police departments. The local assemblyman and town mayor presented her with awards and citations, forever honoring her birthday as “Marie Suits Day.”

Marie spent the last few years of her life residing in the Valley View Apartments in Palatine Bridge where she was well known among the other residents. She was surrounded by furniture and decorations from her family home, as well as gifts and reminders of her extended family, including photographs and hand-made crocheted blankets.

In addition to her parents, Marie was predeceased by her husband, Harry, just a month shy of their 50th wedding anniversary; a son, Kenneth; a sister, Barbara Rockefeller; and a brother, Paul Walter.

She is survived by two sons, Gary (Cheryl) and Keith (Debbie); her grandchildren Richard (Karen) Suits, Brenda (Skip) Gehring, Darren (Carissa) Suits, Gregory Suits, Brian (Rachel) Suits and Kevin (Sherry) Suits and 12 great-grandchildren along with multiple nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be held 11a.m.-1p.m. on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY, 518-568-7040. A prayer offering will be held at 1pm followed immediately by a graveside service at St. Johnsville Cemetery.  A reception to honor Marie’s life will be held at the Canajoharie Moose Lodge, 205 Erie Blvd, Canajoharie.
