John Salamone, Jr. Obituary

John J. Salamone Jr., cherished brother, uncle and friend passed away peacefully at the age of 71, surrounded by his loved ones, following a courageous battle with Diffuse Systemic Scleroderma. Born and raised in the Mohawk Valley, his life was enriched by the warmth of family gatherings, music, and the performing arts.

He was born in Ilion NY, the son of the late John J. Salamone, Sr., and the late Elaine Sklarz. He was educated in Frankfort and Little Falls schools.

John always had a passion for the arts and music, but his journey into mime began with a transformative experience during high school when Tony Montanaro, a master of the art, performed at his school. This encounter ignited John's lifelong passion for storytelling through mime. He subsequently worked with Montanaro’s Celebration Mime Theater and shared his gift by performing in schools, hospitals, and communities across the country. He also had the privilege of delighting audiences as a clown with the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus, where he once performed in front of “The Great American Juggler,” Bobby May. Additionally, his deep love for music led him to tour with a popular professional touring band in NY, Maine, Montreal, Canada. Throughout his career, John was known for his creativity and his focus on building deep connections with his audiences. Beyond entertainment, he found fulfillment in a second career in telecommunications and construction with Cox Communications.

In 2005, he was diagnosed with Diffuse Systemic Scleroderma.

John served as a Scleroderma Ambassador with a mission to educate others about the rarity of the disease and its effects, all while spreading his message of hope and perseverance. He faced each day with remarkable courage and resilience, navigating the complexities of Scleroderma with grace. Throughout his journey, John raised awareness and inspired others with his unwavering spirit.

John was loved by all who knew him, especially his family. Near or far, he was always there to lend a listening ear, give advice, make us laugh, and he always gave the best hugs.  His presence brought comfort and light to every room.  With his genuine kindness and giving ways he made everyone feel valued and loved.  Whether it was through his gentle encouragement, his infectious sense of humor (even when he purposely did things to provoke a reaction!), or the way he made every moment feel special, he had a way of making those around him feel safe and appreciated.

His legacy extends beyond his performances and advocacy. His ability to bring joy and laughter, even amidst personal challenges, left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and everyone touched by his compassion and strength. As he often said, "Armed with love, we can do anything." John, your spirit and laughter will continue to resonate in our hearts forever.

He is survived by his partner, Christine Estey; two sisters, Jodi Taylor (John), and Donna Cool (Fred); two brothers, James Salamone (June) and Michael Sklarz; many cousins, nieces and nephews, several great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as his beloved pets. A special thanks to Mike, Nora, Al, Eddie, Steve, Charlie and all of his lifelong dearest friends and his caretakers.

He was predeceased by his parents and his faithful furry friend, Tobey.

A graveside service will take place on Tuesday, September 3rd, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Frankfort, NY.  In keeping with John's wishes, there will be no calling hours, but all are welcome to attend the graveside services.
