Stratford - John A. Burton, Sr., 77, a longtime Stratford resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at his home with his devoted family by his side.
He was born on January 30, 1949, in Little Falls, NY, the son of the late Arden “Bucky” and Alice (Plato) Burton. John was educated in Dolgeville schools.
Mr. Burton was a United States Marine Corps veteran, enlisting on January 17, 1968, and was honorably discharged on September 12, 1969, with the rank of Private First Class.
On August 8, 1970, John was united in marriage to Kathie L. Mason in Salisbury, NY.
Until his retirement in 2011, John was employed as a heavy machine operator for Rifenburg Construction in Troy, NY.
John’s life was centered around his loved ones. He enjoyed the quality time he spent with his family especially with his cherished grandson. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. In the winter, John took much pride in grooming the snowmobile trails around his area.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kathie; two sons, John A. Burton, Jr. and wife Jennifer, and Steven Burton and wife Beth; a grandson, Zachary Burton and Katherine Loomis, and Chad Daley Jr., who was like a grandson to John; and several nieces and nephews.
He was pre-deceased by his sisters, Susan Moshier, Lynne Shaut, Doranne “Deb” Spofford and Christine Egan.
Family and friends are invited to attend the graveside services with full military honors accorded on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 11:00 am at Mt. View Memorial Gardens, Little Falls, NY. There are no calling hours. After the cemetery service a celebration of John's life will follow at the Stratford Town Hall, 120 Piseco Road, Stratford, NY. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the locally owned and family operated Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to Hannaford Markets) 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY. In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions to either the Food Bank of Stratford, 120 Piseco Road, Stratford, NY 13470 or to Stratford United Methodist Church, 2545 NY 29A, Stratford, NY 13470.
