Joan B (Geloso) Conte

Ilion - Joan B. Conte, 96, a longtime Ilion resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026, at Little Falls Hospital, with her loving family by her side.

She was born on July 24, 1929, in Frankfort, NY, the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Anna (Terras) Geloso. Joan was a graduate of Ilion High School, class of 1947.

On June 18, 1993, Joan was united in marriage to Michael C. Conte at the Annunciation Church in Ilion, NY by the late Rev. Joseph Benintende. The couple shared a blessed union of 25 years until the passing of Michael on July 17, 2018.

For many years, Joan was employed at the former Great American Grocery Store in Ilion, NY. Prior to that, she worked at the former Loblaws Grocery Store in Ilion.

Mrs. Conte was a member of Annunciation Church in Ilion, NY.

She was a proud mother of her three children, who were the center of her world and the source of her greatest joy. She was also a loving grandmother and great-grandmother to many, each of whom she cherished deeply and who brought immense pride and happiness to her life. Her family was one of her greatest accomplishments.

She is survived by her daughters, Joann Fitzer and Karen Miers and husband Gary; a son, Bert McCumber; two grandchildren, Erin Sanchex and husband Jason, Christopher Miers and Carole Fitzer; six great grandchildren, Andrew Fitzer, Paige Fitzer, Hannah Sanchez, Madison Sanchez, Christian Sanchez, and Sarah Sanchez; a sister, Marion Gorman; a sister - in - law, Margaret Consiglio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her grandson, Michael Fitzer; her sisters, Rose Fell and Julia Robel; and her brothers, Enaus, Joseph, Frank, Sam Geloso.

A memorial mass will take place on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 10:30 am at the Annunciation Church, West St., Ilion, NY with Rev. Paul Catena, officiating. Burial will follow at Armory Hill Cemetery, Ilion, NY. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the locally owned and family operated Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to Hannaford Markets) 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY.
