Jeanette "Jean" (Haggerty) VanValkenburg

St. Johnsville – Jeanette “Jean” VanValkenburg, 87 a long time St. Johnsville resident, passed away peacefully on Sunday September 15, 2019 at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, NY with her loving family by her side.

She was born February 7, 1932 in St. Johnsville the daughter of the late Harold J. and Ruth P. (Hayes) Haggerty and was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School.

Jean was employed at the former Felt Shoe in St. Johnsville, prior to her retirement at age 62, and was a member of the former St. Patrick’s Church in St. Johnsville.

Jean was a woman devoted to her family. She was a loving and nurturing mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In her earlier years, Jean enjoyed cooking delicious meals for her loved ones. She loved to read, especially the celebrity tabloids and always kept up on current affairs. Jean also enjoyed her walks to Stewart’s and most of all enjoyed laughing and entertaining others with her stories of her journey through life.

Survivors include her loving and devoted daughter, Christa Brownell (Robert Cowles) of Gloversville; four grand children, Tasha Smith, Tiffany Hillock and her husband Michael, Ashley Smith and her companion, Jay Conigilaro, and Shawn Seeley, as well as great grandchildren Dustin Smith, Alex Battisti, Shawn Seeley, Melissa Hillock (Peter Cannellos), and Matthew (Tricia) Hillock; a great great grandchild, Colton Hillock. Jean is also survived by several cousins and many friends including the Caroga Lake camp family.

She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Cindy VanValkenburg in 1971, a son Harold “Hal” VanValkenburg on January 26, 2004; and her brother, George Haggerty on December 12, 2013.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Thursday September 19, 2019 from 4 – 6 pm at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY 518-568-7040. A prayer service will be held at the conclusion of the visitation at 6:00 pm. Graveside service will be held on Friday September 20, 2019 at 11:00 am at West St. Johnsville Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions to either St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN, 38105 or to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73123. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
