Jean Niemeyer Obituary

Jean Alice Niemeyer, 92, of Dolgeville, NY passed away peacefully on Friday, August 19, 2022, at Little Falls Hospital with her loving family by her side.

Jean was born on August 18th, 1930, in Springfield Massachusetts, daughter to the late John and Madeline (Paulk) Mulcahy. Eldest of four, her family moved to Florida when she was 11.  When she was 17, she met a young, handsome sailor, Robert Niemeyer, while waiting tables in Jacksonville.

On February 14th, 1948, Jean and Robert crossed the Florida-Georgia line to elope. This marriage union blessed their lives for 59 years until Robert's passing on December 7, 2006.

For some 60 years, Jean was the owner and operator of "Jean A. Niemeyer, Tax Preparation". While most people dreaded tax season, Jean looked forward to it as it meant visits with her clients, many of whom were also her close friends. She took joy in traveling to see them, to catch up with them and help them through what most people would find an anxious time. Her keen eye and calm reassurance won the hearts of everyone she assisted and helped her grow her business over the years. Each tax season her family would call on her to retire and each time, they knew the answer would be the same resounding "next year". She was a hard worker and skilled at many things. She owned and operated the “Sittin Pretty” furniture upholstery shop in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. In addition to this, Jean and Robert owned a successful leather goods business for 30 years as well. The couple moved from Holland, Massachusetts to Salisbury, New York in 1985. Purchasing their retirement dream home but never actually retiring.

Aside from her business ventures Jean was a nature lover. She enjoyed feeding and watching wild birds, and helped to rescue many animals over the years.  She was a voracious reader, devouring novels and educational literature alike. She always loved a good Western novel. Her appetite for education and a good read never slowed down, even in her old age. It was not often you would catch her without a book in her hands, and several more stacked near wherever she was sitting.

Jean was one of a kind, and beloved by all whose hearts she touched. Her love of her family had no bounds. She was a generous, loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She saw the good in people and always looked for kind things to say even in adversity. Her children and grandchildren could tell her their troubles, and she would listen intently, give advice, and always point out the silver lining. Rarely does anyone come across someone as truly whimsical as Jean; to know her, and to be gifted with her wisdom, was a treasure.

She was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness in 1939 and loved her study of the Bible most of all.  She appreciated the saying “A Bible that is falling apart is often owned by one who is not”. She truly believed that the Bible is the Word of God and spent her entire life reading it daily. She treasured and safeguarded her close relationship with Jehovah God, and she always encouraged her children to do the same.

Her granddaughters were the lights of her life, and she cherished them. She affectionately called them Samandy, Hannah Bee, and Kitten.

Jean is survived by her two children, whom she adored and referred to as “gifts from the Creator. Her son, Jonathan Niemeyer and daughter and son in law, Rebecca and Kitt Paatz, also her three treasured granddaughters and their husbands, Samantha (Jonathan) Forte, Hannah (Jeffrey) Hurteau, and Kellen (Corey) Carter; as well as her youngest sister Ann Smith of Roanoke, VA whom she loved with all of her heart. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and an abundance of special cherished friends. Her son, daughter, son in law, and granddaughters loved her deeply and will miss her always.

Jean is predeceased by her husband, Robert Niemeyer; her father John Mulcahy, and her stepmother, Anna Mae Mulcahy, who was also her best friend, her mother, Madeline Gamosh, her brother, John Mulcahy Jr., her sister, Martha Jane Eliasson, and her beloved niece, Elsa Juliano.
