St. Johnsville - Janey Claus Hayes, 79, of Crum Creek Road, St. Johnsville NY, passed away November 21, 2025, at her residence.
She was born on January 14th, 1946, in Little Falls Hospital, the daughter of the late Virgil and Lelah (Smith) Claus. Janey attended Oppenheim Ephratah Central School.
On November 9, 1963, she was united in marriage to David G. Hayes at the Crum Creek Lutheran Church by the Rev. Herman Briele. The couple shared a devoted and loving marriage for 48 years before his passing in 2011.
Janey was a member of the Crum Creek Evangelic Church until it's closing and since had attended St Paul's Lutheran Church in St. Johnsville, NY. She had been a Sunday school teacher at Crum Creek. Janey was known for being an excellent cook, baker, and especially for her pancake breakfast. She cherished the holidays and hosted for several years the Mosher Family Christmas Eve on the farm they owned on Youkers Bush Road. She was particular about her farms appearance making sure her lawns were meticulously mowed and her line fences trimmed to perfection.
She is predeceased by her husband David, parents Virgil and Lelah Claus, In-Laws Alfred and Marguerite Hayes, special Aunts Evelyn (George) Hansen, Kate Claus, Marion (Ken) Darling, siblings Peter Claus, Jeffrey Claus, Bonnie Claus, Kellie Fiskaa, cousin Linda Myers and Great Aunt and Uncle Helen and Wesley Smith and niece Alyssa Paratore.
She leaves behind her faithful canine companion "Sullivan" along with her children, Mindy (Tim) Mackesey, Molly Hayes, Adam (Tara) Hayes as well as her beloved grandchildren Shannon Ellen Mackesey (Toot), Kyle Alfred (Kristina) Hayes, Seth (Tia) Bly, Austin Hayes and companion (Kelsey), lan Adam Hayes, Taylor Nicole Hayes (Tater) and a brother Shawn Claus, special nieces and nephews Liz (Todd) Vickers, Corey, Haley, Tami, Peter, Chad, Danny, Heather, Jen, Dana, Jordan, Tyler, Zach, Bobby and Jen Williams, Tracy (Dan) Nunez, Gavin (Sarah) Koss, sister-in-law's Katch (Bob) Williams and Deb (Fred)Test, also cousin Doug Stowell and childhood friend Louise. She was known by many as "Gram."
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at 2:00 pm from the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in St. Johnsville, NY with Rev. David Johnson officiating. Relatives, friends, and neighbors are invited to pay their respects at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 32 W. Main Street, St. Johnsville on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, from 12:00 pm until the time of the services at 2:00 pm. Internment will be at St. Johnsville Cemetery following the service. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to the Masonic Lodge) 20 Bridge Street, St. Johnsville, NY. Janey loved her animals; any memorial contributions can go to the Herkimer Humane Society, 514 State Route 5s, Mohawk, NY 13407, honoring her life. Envelopes will be available at the Church.
