Rome - Jack G. Veazy, Sr. 82, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 6, 2024, at the Abraham House, Rome, NY.
He was born on July 26, 1942, in Lansing, Michigan, the son of the late Jack and Mary (Kitchen) Veazy and was a graduate of North Miami High School, class of 1960.
Mr. Veazy was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. He entered the U.S. Army in July 1964. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, as a Helicopter Crew Chief, returning home in 1968. He received the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation and the National Defense Medal.
Jack joined the VFW in Miami in 1968 held various Post chairs, served as Post Commander in 1974-75 and as Dade County Council Commander from 1974-76. Jack transferred to Rome Post 2246 in 1980. He was elected to the office of Post Quartermaster serving in that position from 1980-2001.
After holding many of the District Chairs Jack was elected as 4th District Commander 2002-03 and was an All-American District Commander.
At the Department level, Jack has had many appointments to include State Membership Chairman 2005-2006. He also taught the first membership class by Satellite at OTI in Binghamton. Jack is served as State Chief of Staff for 2006-08.
Jack was elected as State Sr. Vice Commander at the 90th State Convention. He was elected as the State Commander at the 91st State Convention.
In addition to his VFW duties Jack served as a member of the Selective Service Board #49 in Rome, New York. He served on the House Committee at the Frank J. Stecko Polish Americans Veterans Post. He was a life member of the VFW Post 2246, Stanwix Veterans Men’s Club, The Military Order of the Cooties, and the R. Kirk Parkhurst American Legion Post # 1448.
Jack started his working career as a steamfitter at Merrill Stevens Shipyard in Miami, Florida, after moving to New York, he was employed at Revere Copper Brass in Rome and was last employed as the Building and Grounds Supervisor for Fort Stanwix National Monument in Rome, retiring in 2006.
Survivors include his children, Teresa Dickan and husband Mike, Vivian Veazy and Jack G. Veazy, Jr.; two grandsons, John and Evan Dickan.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 16, 2024, at 12:00 noon at the Gerald B H Solomon National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY with full military honors accorded. A Celebration of Jack's life will be held at the Stanwix Veteran's & Men's Club, 6774 Lamphear Road, Rome, NY on Thursday, December 19, 2024, from 3 - 6 pm. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the locally owned and family operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to Hannaford Markets), 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY, 315-866-1500.
