Gary Stefan Spanfelner (Spanny)
March 30, 1955 – June 4, 2025
Herkimer - Gary S. Spanfelner, 70, a lifelong Herkimer resident, affectionately known as “Spanny,” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Wynn Hospital, Utica, NY, surrounded by the love and support of his family.
He was born on March 30, 1955, at Herkimer Hospital. The son of the late Merrill and Shirley (Moose) Spanfelner and was a graduate of Herkimer High School, class of 1974.
Gary was a member of the Army National Guard and a proud member of the Herkimer Elks for many years. Gary had a diverse range of interests. He found joy in fishing, hunting, coin collecting, and tinkering with machines—always eager to fix or enhance something with his hands.
Gary was a master floor installer for 53 years. He took immense pride in his work, transforming ordinary spaces into beautiful, functional areas that reflected his commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Gary is survived by his companion of many years, Patricia DeCarr; his daughters Tricia DeCarr (Amrit Dhaniram), Mary Spanfelner (Alex Craska), Heather Bellinger, and Samantha Schlick (Scott); and his cherished grandchildren James, Edith, Leo, and Hazley. He also leaves behind his sisters Deborah Ruiz (Tito) and Rebecca Spanfelner (Trevor Fravor), as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He will also be dearly missed by his lifelong friends: Dave Roballard and Dave Knapp - bonds of friendship that stood the test of time and meant the world to him.
A celebration of Gary’s life will take place on Friday, June 13, 2025, from 5 - 8 pm at the Polish Community Home, 319 S. Washington St., Herkimer, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to remember Gary by spending time in nature, repairing something with your hands, or sharing a good story—just as he would have loved.
