Gail P. Campo

Ilion - Gail P. Campo passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023. She was 82 years old.

Gail was born in Stamford, NY the daughter of James and Eunice Prete. She was raised in Piffard, NY and graduated from York High School. She subsequently graduated with a BS and MS from SUNY Geneseo. Advanced graduate work was done at the University of Rochester.

She married Dr. Robert E. Campo in 1966 and they had their only child, Dr. Michelle Campo.

Gail taught elementary grades at Wheatland - Chili for six years before accepting a position as Assistant Professor and Supervisor in the campus school at SUNY Potsdam. After moving with her family to the Mohawk Valley she worked in the Migrant Ed. Program at Herkimer County BOCES for 10 years and retired.

She was active in the community as a member of the Home Bureau, Lamplighters, Ilion Historical Club, the Ilion Library and the Friends of the Ilion Library. She volunteer for about 20 years for the library and the Friends group. Gail held leadership positions in both, serving as Board President for several terms. Gail authored a chapter in WOMEN BELONG IN HISTORY BOOKS. Bob and Gail traveled widely, including USA, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean and Europe.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, and brother, Robert who was killed in combat in Vietnam. Left to mourn her passing is her husband of 57 years, Dr. Robert E. Campo and her daughter, Dr. Michelle Campo, Associate Dean of the graduate colleges of the University of Iowa.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the care and compassion of the staff at Valley Health Services. In respect to Gail's wishes, no services are planned. Private burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to Hannaford Markets), 527 E.
