St. Johnsville - Frederick J. Benson, 77, of St. Johnsville, NY, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
He was born on February 25, 1949, in Cohoes, NY, the son of the late Gustave O. and Mary Verda (Trudeau) Benson. Fred was educated at Cohoes High School.
On October 21, 1971, Fred was united in marriage to Barbara J. Proctor in Troy, NY. The couple shared a blessed union of 45 years until the passing of Barbara on July 15, 2017.
For 39 years, Fred was employed by the Department of Public Works for the City of Cohoes, NY.
Fred was his happiest when he was surrounded by his family. He proved himself a loving and caring father and grandfather who always put the needs and concerns of his loved ones first. In his leisure he enjoyed watching wrestling on TV and in the summer, grilling for the family.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Taylor and husband Carmen; three sons, Robert Benson, Shawn Benson and wife Suzanne and Justin Benson; his grandchildren, Kayla Bersani and husband Dominick Jr., C.J. Taylor, Melanie Taylor, Scott Taylor, Kristina Parker, Brittney Benson and Thea Benson; his great grandchildren, Alicianna Bersani, Zachary Taylor, Alexandria Parker, Natalia Bersani and Lorenzo Bersani; a sister, Mildred Bryans; and several nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.
He was pre-deceased by a great grandson, Dominick Bersani III; a sister, Helen Benson and two brothers, Harold Benson and Gustave Benson.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 5- 7 pm at the locally owned and family operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY. A prayer service will follow at 7:00 pm with David Keyser officiating. Burial will take place later in the spring at St. Johnsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
