Herkimer - Dorothy “Dot” D’Arpino of Herkimer, NY passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, just a few months shy of her 100th birthday.
She was born on June 3, 1925, in Nicholville, NY to Roy and Louise Raymond. The oldest of five children, she preferred being outdoors, assisting her father in chopping wood rather than doing chores in the home. Always an avid learner, she started school at an early age and flourished academically. She was fortuitously provided with the opportunity to attend college by a generous offer from a friend of the family who learned about her desire to become an educator. She graduated from Potsdam State Teachers College and began a long career as a teacher.
Dorothy married Anthony D’Arpino of Voorheesville, NY on July 13, 1947, and shared a loving marriage of 73 years until his death in 2020. They moved to Herkimer, NY, raised four children, and she spent much of her career teaching second grade at L. W. Bills School. She was an active member of her community and had a passion for education. She taught using the philosophy that each child was unique in their learning style and should be taught accordingly. Even in recent years, she would often see a former student who wanted to stop and say hello.
Dorothy spent her retirement years with her husband, enjoying trips with friends and family to Myrtle Beach, SC and Ogunquit, ME, playing cards with friends and experimenting with thousands of recipes she collected over the years. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, for her fantastic (sometimes inadvertent) comedic timing and her love of Yankees baseball.
She is survived by her four children, Lynn Ashworth and husband Geoff of Wilton, CT, Tina Cirelli and husband Bryan of Herkimer, NY, Anthony D’Arpino, Jr. and wife Kathy of Lewisburg, PA and Jon D’Arpino of Portland, CT. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Austin Sanders and wife Lindsay, Blair Ashworth, Cameron Blue and husband Sean and Jack D’Arpino, five great grandchildren, Rowan, Crew, Harper, Hank and Rhett, and several nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Margaret Kingsley and Marilyn Chesborough, and two brothers, Donald and John Raymond.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services or calling hours. Arrangements are under the caring guidance of the locally owned and family operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to Hannaford Markets), 527 E. Albany St., Herkimer, NY 315-866-1500.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to Little Falls Hospital, Valley Health Services and the Masonic Care Community for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Dorothy. All memorial contributions may be made to the Masonic Care Community, 2150 Bleecker St., Utica, NY 13501.
