It is with great sadness that the family of Donna J. Swartz, 95, announce her passing on January 5, 2026. A lifelong resident of St. Johnsville, Donna spent the last eight months of her life at Wells House in Johnstown.
Born on April 22, 1930, Donna was one of ten children of the late Frank A. and Laura M. (Wick) Nellis. She attended David H. Robbins Elementary School and graduated from St. Johnsville High School in 1948. Though she had plans and arrangements to attend college and pursue her dream of becoming a teacher, Donna chose to stay home at the request of her beloved father. Her devotion to family was unwavering and remained the cornerstone of her life.
On November 25, 1951, Donna married the love of her life, Leland George Swartz. Together they raised two children, Dennis and Laura. Donna was a dedicated mother whose life was defined by her love and commitment to her children and their happiness.
When her children reached school age, Donna began working as an aide at David H. Robbins Elementary School, where she spent many years providing a warm, positive influence on countless young people. She taught respect, kindness, empathy, and tolerance—values she continued to instill in her grandchildren, Ashley and Matthew, whom she adored. Donna and George cherished weekends spent with their grandchildren and later found great joy in their three great-grandchildren: Beckett, Kinley, and Hudson.
A devoted Catholic throughout her life, Donna was an active member of St. Patrick’s Church in St. Johnsville until its closure.
She was known for her thoughtfulness—especially her habit of sending cards to friends and family—and for her delicious homemade pies.
Donna was predeceased by her husband and nine siblings. She is survived by her son, Dennis Swartz of Johnstown, and daughter, Laura (Richard) Scouten of Fort Ann; grandchildren, Ashley (Kevin) Griswold and Matt Scouten (Katie); great-grandchildren, Beckett, Kinley, and Hudson Griswold; sister-in-law, Jean Swartz; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family may call on Saturday, January 10, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the locally owned and family operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service (next to the Masonic Lodge) 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY. A funeral service will follow immediately at 12:00 PM with Deacon James Bower officiating. Interment will take place in the spring at the West St. Johnsville Cemetery.
Those who wish may make memorial contributions to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in Donna’s memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
