It is with deep sorrow and enduring love that we announce the passing of Carl R. Gray, Jr. (Big Dawg), 74 of Fort Plain (Town of Minden) on Thursday, July 24, 2025.
He was born on December 2, 1950, in Little Falls, the son of late Carl R. and Marion (Rice) Gray Sr. Carl was a graduate of Fort Plain High School.
On May 23, 1970, Carl was united in marriage to Barbara J. Coffin. The couple shared a blessed union of 37 years until the passing of Barbara on April 4, 2008.
Carl lived a life marked by strength, service, love and laughter. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 24 years, retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. His career took him across oceans and continents through moments of challenge and triumph but always bringing him back to his family.
Upon retiring from active duty, he returned home where he was employed at former Sentinel Products in St. Johnsville, NY.
Carl is survived by his companion, Jean Swartz; a daughter Kelly Gray; two sons, Carl R. Gray III and wife Celena and Robert Gray and wife Jessica; two sisters Darlene Spaulding and husband Dale and Loretta Wells and companion Mike Reid; 15 cherished grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; also, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 5-8 pm at the locally owned and family operated, Vincent A. Enea Funeral service (next to Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St, St. Johnsville, NY. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 11:00 am in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at West St. Johnsville Cemetery with full military honors accorded.
