Alfred (Alfie) James Maher, 81, passed away on August 18, 2022, in New Smyrna Beach after a short stay in the hospital.
Alfie was born in Little Falls, the son of the late James Maher and Rosiene Clements Maher. He was educated at St. Mary's Academy in Little Falls.
After high school Alfie enlisted in the US Marine Corps serving 4 years from 1960 to 1964 and was honorably discharged in May of 1964.He attended SUNY Brockport graduating with a teaching degree in history and went on to join the faculty at Owen D. Young Central School in Van Hornsville where he also became the Varsity basketball coach and assistant football coach. From there he went on to Adirondack Central High School in Boonville where he continued his basketball coaching career. He produced many winning teams at both Owen D. Young and Adirondack Cental and was later inducted into the high school Basketball Hall of Fame.
After retirement Al moved to New Smyrna Beach where he enjoyed many years golfing, fishing, going to the beach and socializing with his many friends.
Alfie was predeceased by his son Aaron James Maher. He is survived by his daughter Kelly Ann Lewis of Sherrills Ford, NC., 3 grandsons Andrew, James and John Lewis all of NC, and his former wife, and close friend, Camille Cairns Maher. Also, his sister-in-law Linda Pedro Maher, wife of Alfie’s late brother John Eugene Maher, of St. Johnsville, niece Courtney Maher and nephew Shane Maher his wife Michele and his 2 great nephews Lincoln and James.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge Street, St. Johnsville. A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family in the spring or summer of 2023. Details will be forthcoming.
