Herkimer – Richard E. (Dick) Blais, 78, a long time Herkimer resident passed away peacefully on Monday June 5, 2017 at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born January 9, 1939 in Herkimer the son of the late Ernest L. and Gladys (DuPont) Blais. Dick was a graduate of Herkimer High School, class of 1958.

His marriage to Louise Viscomi took place on June 20, 1959 at St. Anthony’s Church by Reverend Gustave Perificato.

Dick was last employed as a butcher at Big M Grocery Store in Dolgeville. At one time he was owner and operator of the Blais Butcher Block in Herkimer. Prior to that he was employed as a butcher for the former A& P Market and the former Aiello’s Market, both located in Herkimer.

Mr. Blais was of the catholic faith.

Dick’s life was centered around his loving wife and children, and he especially cherished the quality time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dick was a people person, he enjoyed visiting with everyone he knew and was known to tell a joke or two. He liked to hunt and fish in his leisure. He also enjoyed woodworking and was an avid New York Giants fan.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Louise; a daughter, Nancy (Mark) Fulmer of Little Falls; three sons, Rick (Grace) Blais of Mohawk, Renny ( Jennifer) Blais of Herkimer and Randy (Connie) Blais of Herkimer; six grandchildren, Lindsey (Rachel) Fulmer, Brent (Sheena) Fulmer, Dr. Dolores “DeeDee” (Dr. Ian) Mullikin, Clarinda Blais, Ricky Blais and Cory Blais; two great grandchildren, Matthew & Brayden; a brother, Robert (Jackie) Blais of Herkimer; and several nieces & nephews.

He was pre-deceased by a sister, Beverly Sosnoski.

In keeping with Dick’s wishes funeral services and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery will be private and held at the convenience of his devoted family. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to NBT Bank), 527 East Albany St., Herkimer, NY 315-866-1500.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of  Hospice & Palliative Care of Oneida, Herkimer and Eastern Madison Counties and the Herkimer Fire Rescue for the care and compassion shown to Dick and his family during his illness.
