Martha E. (Savary) Dockey

Canajoharie – Martha E. Dockey, 93 of Arkell Hall, Canajoharie and a long time St. Johnsville resident, passed away peacefully on Friday March 30, 2018 at Little Falls Hospital.

She was born June 6, 1924 in New York City the daughter of the late Charles P. and Martha A. (Whiteford) Savary. Martha was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School, class of 1942. She graduated from NYU -  Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing in New York City where she earned her degree as a registered nurse. Martha furthered her education in Public Health Nursing at Syracuse University.

While studying at Bellevue, she was a cadet nurse at the start of World War II. Martha was hoping to be stationed at a base hospital to help with the war effort.

She was married to William Revere Dockey who preceded her in death on April 6, 2004.

Mrs. Dockey was last employed as a Registered Nurse – Public Heath Nurse for Montgomery County Nursing Services in Fonda. After her retirement she was a substitute School Nurse for the St. Johnsville School District.

Martha was a member of the Grace Christian Church. She also volunteered her time at the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library. Martha was a former member of the St. Johnsville Eastern Star, 2F club and was a former board member of the St. Johnsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Martha was an active member of the St. Johnsville Senior Saints, participating in many trips with the group.

Martha, along with Joyce Tenyck, co-founded the Grace Church newsletter, “Grace Notes” that was distributed throughout the United States and Internationally.

A woman devoted to her family, Martha proved herself a loving and caring mother and grandmother. She was always there to help her family and always put the need of her loved ones first.

Survivors include her son, David Dockey and his wife Jo Kathleen of Black Creek, NY; three grandchildren, Meredith DiPietro and her husband Joseph, Matthew Theurer and Christopher Dockey; and several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Deborah Ann Theurer; and three siblings.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 5, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Grace Christian Church, 20 Center St., St. Johnsville, NY with Reverend Martin Glynn, officiating. Burial will take place later in the spring at St. Johnsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contribution to the Grace Christian Church, 20 Center, St., St. Johnsville, NY 13452. Envelopes will be available at the church.
