Raymond J. Coombs

Herkimer - Raymond J. (Ray) Coombs, 73, of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Saturday April 14, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica, NY.

He was born October 26, 1944 in Queens, NY the son of the late Edward H. and Helen (Roome) Coombs. Ray was a graduate of Vernon Verona Sherrill High School.  He also attended Oswego State College and graduated from Herkimer County Community College.

His marriage to Patricia N. O'Bryan took place on February 11, 1983 at St. Francis de Sales Church by Reverend Robert S. Shinos.

Mr. Coombs was a United States Navy veteran enlisting on November 15, 1966 and was honorably discharged on April 9, 1974 with the rank of CTM2.

Ray was employed at Par Tech in New Hartford where he was the Sr. Director, McDonald’s Account and previously was employed at MDS.

He was blessed with a loving wife who was his best friend and children who were the light of his life. He also knew the joy and pride of being a “Grandpa” to his cherished grandchildren. Ray had a caring heart, especially when it came to his family and friends. He was also the first to lend a helping hand to anyone that was in need. Ray was an avid golfer and enjoyed relaxing, tending to his gardens.

Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Patricia; three daughters, Shannon Buffa and her husband Mark of Alpharetta, Georgia; Jennifer Cammarata and her husband Charles of Holland, NY and Kathleen Coombs of Herkimer; a son, Jeffrey Coombs and his fiancée Jennifer of Temecula, California; a brother, Edward Coombs and his wife Marilyn of Ogdensburg, NY; a sister, Barbara Larson of Connecticut; seven grandchildren, Paige, Tanner, Levi, Jeremy, Sabrina Rae, Dylan and Samantha; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Eileen O'Bryan of Herkimer, and in-laws, Steve and Karen O'Bryan, Carol and Jim Babcock and Tim and Mary O'Bryan.

He was pre-deceased by a grandson, C.J. Cammarata.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 10:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Church, 219 North Bellinger St., Herkimer, NY with the Very Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor, officiating. Burial with full military honors accorded will take place later in the spring at Calvary Cemetery.  The family will be receiving relatives and friends on Wednesday April 18, 2018 from 4-7 pm at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to NBT Bank), 527 East Albany St., Herkimer, NY 315-866-1500. All memorial contributions may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
