St. Johnsville – Olena (Helen) Martyniuk, 95, of St. Johnsville, (Town of Minden), passed away peacefully on Thursday January 26, 2017 at the Alpine Nursing Home, Little Falls, with her loving family by her side.

She was born October 3, 1921 in the Ukraine, the daughter of the late Adam and Maria (Odynczuk) Datczuk and was educated in the Ukraine.

Her marriage to Walter Martyniuk took place on October 20, 1942. The couple shared a blessed union of 64 years until Walter’s passing on November 1, 2006.

She was last employed at the former Felt Shoe Company in St. Johnsville. While living in the Ukraine she worked as a pharmacist.

Olena's life was centered around her loved ones, especially her loving grandchildren and great grandchildren who fondly called her Baba. She enjoyed tending her flower gardens and found much happiness cooking for her family.

Mrs. Martyniuk was a member of the St. Johnsville Senior Saints and enjoyed traveling with the group.

Survivors include her son, Michael Martyniuk and wife Sharon of Herkimer; a daughter, Mary Ann Smith and husband Ronald of Scotia; her loving grandchildren, Serena Pierre of Centreville, VA, Amanda Martyniuk of Herndon, VA, Shaun Smith of Scotia, and Brian Smith and wife Kimberly of Spencerport, NY; four cherished great grandchildren, Lindsey Smith, Kayla Smith, Ayva Pierre and Jayden Pierre; a brother-in-law, Jerry Martyniuk and Sandra Neely of Dolgeville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by three siblings.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday February 1, 2017 at 3:00 pm at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (Next to the Masonic Lodge), 20 Bridge St., St. Johnsville, NY 518-568-7040, with Reverend Rafal Dadello, pastor of the Holy Spirit Polish National Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Johnsville Cemetery in the spring. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday February 1, 2017 from 1:00 pm until the time of the services. All memorial contributions may be made to either the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090 or to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Alpine Nursing home for the care and compassion shown to Olena and the family during her stay.
